Year 5 Classes

Year 5 Teaching Staff

Year 5 comprises St Cecilia - Mr Innes and St Mary- Miss Mitchell.

Curriculum:

Throughout the Autumn term, Year 5 Maths will comprise of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. In English, the whole school is looking at ‘Promise’ as our opening text. Following this, Year 5 will look at the book ‘The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore’ followed by ‘Cosmic’.

The Year 5 topic work will focus on the Ancient Egyptians and will involve designing and making a death mask. After October half term, Year 5 will be looking at Earth and Space.

In Science this term, the children are learning about Sound. After October half term, the Science will link heavily with the topic of Space.

In Religious Education, Year 5 are learning about what Pilgrimage across a range of religions and after half term they will study about What Kind of World did Jesus Want? There will also be plenty of opportunity for discussion and debate during these sessions along with our PSHE sessions focusing on Being Me In My World and Celebrating Differences.

In our ICT lessons, the children are learning how computer systems and networks operate including the safe use of the internet.

Our new music lessons look at specific songs: our first one is Livin’ On a Prayer, after this, they will be studying jazz music. In French they will be learning about ‘presenting myself’ which includes phrases about themselves and counting.

 

Reading:

All children are expected to read regularly every week to an adult; each time they read, they will receive raffle tickets.  When they have read 5 times, they will receive raffle tickets and a merit, which will count towards their house.  Other prizes for reading will be given in class throughout the year.

Home/School Planner:

Could you please ensure that your child brings their home/school planner in to school every day. Please feel free to write any comments in it.

Every Friday your child will bring their planner home which will have been signed by their teacher. This should be countersigned by the parent/carer and returned to school again on Monday morning. Children will receive a merit for planners that have been signed when returned on Monday.
